Moodles in Project Zomboid

Project Zomboid uses a series of small pictures called moodles to let you know how your character is feeling. It is surprisingly expressive in it’s simplicity, but it is sometimes hard for newer players to understand what exactly they mean so a guide is helpful. Just click on the icon to find out what the moodle means!

Please note that all strength modifiers stack, so if you are well fed but injured your maximum carry weight will be base max (normally 300)+ 30 – 25 = 295.

On sickness: There are currently three types of sickness that start with queesy: zombie infection, food poisoning and fake sickness due to hypochondriasis. There is no cure for the zombie infection it will end with you becoming a zombie. If you have either of the other types of sickness after you get to the “Feaver” stage the moodle will disappear and you will be healthy again.

Colds are a different type of sickness, you can catch cold by having the “wet” moodle too long. If you don’t want a cold stay out of the rain! The best way to cure a cold is to stay dry, keep yourself well fed and get lots of sleep.

Please note that although it doesn’t show up until you go over your maximum carrying capacity, it is really in effect as soon as you hit the maximum. You will take damage every time you move, but this damage will not kill you. As soon as you reach the minimum it can hurt you, you will not take any more damage.

Controls

Some of the controls in Project Zomboid are intuitive, whereas other ones are not what you would automatically assume.

WASD: Movement

Left Ctrl: Can be used to attack when a weapon is equipped in your primary slot.

Left Shift: Sprint, increases your speed. Your speed will decrease as you become tired of moving at a quicker pace. Shift clicking on a window with curtains or sheets on it will open or close the curtains/sheets.

E: Interact with doors/windows/etc

1: Equip/Unequip Handweapon

2: Equip/Unequip Firearm

3: Equip/Unequip Stab Weapon

F: Equip/Turn On/Off Light Source

Right Mouse Button: Is used to move if you don’t want to move using the WASD. Simply hold down the right mouse button and your character will move towards the mouse pointer. The farther away the pointer is from your character the faster he will attempt to move. The RMB is also used in combination with the LMB to drag objects around. If you have the right mouse button down and you left click your character will make an attack in that direction.

G: Changes the graphic level.

M: Turns the music on or off.

Q: Shout (can be used for attracting the attention of the zombies or npcs)

I: Expand/Collapse Inventory

C:  Toggle Skill Panel

J: Toggle Info Panel

H: Toggle Health Panel

P: Pause

F3: Normal Speed

F4: Fast Forward x1

F5: Fast Forward x2

F6: Fast Forward x3

Guide to your weapons

In “Project Zomboid” your choice of weapon is everything, if you don’t pick the right weapon then you will be the starter in the buffet for zombies.

There are 2 types of weapons Ranged and Close Quarters, lets get started with….

The Shotgun

Shotgun

The shotgun is a potent weapon possible of killing 3-8 zombies if used correctly. Yet, you should never use this weapon unless you are swarmed and you have no other choice. “Why?” you may ask, to put it simply. Sound. Sound is your worst enemy in this game, the more sound that you create the more that zombies will begin to move towards the last known position. Now you may think “Well if I just move away from that position then I will be safe.” WRONG! In theory your right but the problem is zombie won’t just go “Oh crumbs it appears our dinner has escaped!” They will listen for more sounds and move towards that or even sight, they WILL find you make no mistake. Then you also have to worry about the humans….

Molotov Cocktail

Molotov

The molotov cocktail an elegant device of burning, a key ingredient in zombie flombae. This much like the shotgun is more of a last resort sort of weapon. Fire is your second worst enemy (if that wasn’t apparent in the tutorial.) It can clear a huge wave of zombies but keep in mind don’t do it near your safe house or you might have to relocate!

Baseball Bat

Bat

Since there isn’t really a lot of weapons currently in Project Zomboid I am going a little bit of a stretch when I say this is a long ranged weapon but for the sake of argument lets say it is it can keep zombies at an arms length and can take on groups of 2-5 confidently any more and you can expect to run into a bit of trouble. The nice thing about these are low sounds and can usually take 1-3 hits on average to take a zombie down, however if you are looking for that extra bit of power then it is possible to upgrade the baseball to a spiked baseball bat.

Spiked Bat

A spiked baseball bat is fantastic and can usually kill a zombie in 1 or 2 hits. However, you still don’t want to get into too big of a fight.

Axe

Axe

This is like your Swiss army knife in the game: it is able to take down large groups of zombies killing them in 1 hit but it also allows you to knock down doors for wood quickly and effectively. This may sound like the perfect weapon but it comes with a fault a miss and you can say goodbye to a couple of chunks of Bob.

Hammer

Hammer

This is your beginner tool and not invaluable it helps you put up barricades but in a pinch can help you take out a couple of zombies, and I do mean a couple forgot about going after groups with 4 or more with the hammer does take about 3-5 hits before taking down a zombie so huge groups and you might as well take flight over fight. It does take down doors but prepare to stay for a while and is usually inadvisable.

Wood Planks

Planks

Although it is true that you can use this as a weapon good luck killing 1 zombie, this is more of a riot control to push the zombies away from you and take flight, DO NOT TAKE ON GROUPS WITH THIS! Just trust me when I say do not actively go into a fight with this as you will lose.

How to create custom sounds for Project Zomboid

Difficulty:Easy

Unpredictability:Low

How: With Audacity and technical magic.

When:When you want to.

Pros:No more sounds you don’t like.

Cons:May not be as good as the original.

Sounds are arguably one of the most important things in a game. However, what if you don’t like a sound? What about a sound from your favorite game? Or maybe create your own?

What do you need?

-Audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

-Your sound from a video game (if you are creating your own ignore this.)

1.) Download and install Audacity.

2.)Open it up.

3.) Press the red button and as long as you have a microphone create the sound.

or

3.)Get your audio clip from your favorite video game.

4.)Drag the clip into the program audacity and you will see a blue wave.
Image

5.) Then go to the Project Zomboid folder. Need help?
*Shameless Promotion Alert*

6.)Identify which sound you wish to replace in the “sound” folder. Make sure to take a copy of the original sound.

7.) Click File, export as Ogg Vorbis, navigate to the Project Zomboid “sound” folder name it the same as the sound you copied.
Image

8.) Save it to there and run the game hopefully it will work.

How to add mods

Difficulty: Simple

Unpredictability: None

How: Opening Project Zomboid file and add another file.

When: When you want.

Pros: Get to try out a variety of amazing maps.

Cons: Can’t think of any.

I’M BACK! Sorry it’s been so long school has been all over me and a death recently occurred so I had other things on my mind.

Project zomboid is an amazing community full of talented people who make amazing mods to expand on the already amazing game that is project zomboid

2.) Download it. If it comes with an extension (An extension can be found at the end of a file) .rar
then you will require a program that can open it. I suggest WinRar.
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Which program.

3.) Maps:
If you have the downloaded version of Project Zomboid open the folder and go to “media” then
you will find a file called “test.tmx”
Here
Location

WARNING: I highly recommend making a backup there is always
the possibility of a corrupt file or you may want to revert back to the original map. Make a
copy and keep it somewhere safe.

4.) Now put the downloaded file into this area and run the game.

5.) THIS IS FOR DESURA USERS:
C:\Program Files\Desura\Common\Project Zomboid
Then do the steps above.

6.)Sounds:
If you are adding sounds then just do step 3 except after going to media go into “sounds”
Location
and add the sound. If however you are replacing it again I do recommend making a backup of
the sound. Make sure that the extension of the sound is .ogg otherwise it won’t work.
Warning: Music isn’t the same as sound, music is what plays in the
background. Make sure you do not get confused.
Location

7.)Sprites:
Again navigate to media folder except this time go to “texturepacks”.
Location
Like always if you are replacing a sprite then remember to make copys. If you are just adding
then sling the files in there.

WARNING: If you are changing the UI (the hud) then the picture does not go in there but goes in
the “UI” folder in “Media”
Location

Enjoy! :D

Getting started first time around

Difficulty:Very Easy,

Unpredictability:Low,

How: Playing the game!

When: Start of the game

Pros: A nice base and equipment to start off with.

Cons: Can take a while to actually start the gaming.

Note: This is for the old update, a new version with the added interface will be added soon. The information is still relevant but there are parts missing.

NOTE: I do paraphrase some of AdricTheGreat’s tips. Want it direct from the source? Then check his tutorial In the premium video guides section.

Oh look at you all bright eyed and bushy tailed! You think your ready for the pre-alpha PZ? Look at you go….. Dead. See life ain’t too easy out there, but don’t worry I am here to help!

Firstly I do HIGHLY recommend that you play the game once or twice anyways so there isn’t any surprises, there is alot of stuff I am going to ruin in this guide which are quite giggle worthy to find on your own. However perhaps you already know what to do and just want to skip the tutorial. Well if that is the case then keep an eye out for this END TUTORIAL

For the rest of us, let’s start!

First let’s familirise ourselves with all the icons on the screen.

This will be explained a bit more in the tutorial, but this is your inventory icon.
Image

The inventory is used to keep track of all the items you may come across, if you want to add an item to your inventory then all you do is click on the item then click on the box icon. If you want to access the inventory however just click on the box and you will presented with this box.

Image

All those empty boxes are for your items, this is where they are stored. Up at the top is the weight counter, those of you who are familiar with RPG’s know about the weight limit. In this game however it is a little different the higher the number goes up the shorter you can run and eventually when near the top will mean a slower walking speed, go over it completely and you won’t be able to walk. If you want to find out how much an item ways just hover your mouse cursor over the item in question.

Now lets move onto….

The heart
Image
Which I am sure many of you can guess is your health. When you click on it you will be presented a picture of Bob’s body.

Image

The body will highlight red in the areas that have been injured. The bar next to it can act as your health bar in general. If you get injured there are usually many ways to heal yourself makeshift bandages, painkillers, beta blockers (more for the psyche) and sleeping pills are all health items that need to be administered. To admister these items all you have to do is, click on the health object then click on the heart much like how you put an item in your inventory.

Now we move onto….

Primary and Secondary Bubbles:

(Refer to image below)

This is pretty easy to explain the big circle is where your weapon of choice goes and the second one is the secondary weapon holder. My biggest suggestion for this is to put the wood planks there in case you are in a hurry to barricade something, then it means it is just there, ready to go.

I feel the clock is pretty self explanatory so I leave that to you.

Now to move onto the actual game.

When you first start of you will be in a room with your wife, you will notice these…

Image

These are just tutorial bubbles now these are really helpful on their own but just in case, you can click “No more” and recieve no more hints as I will be explaining most things here.

First of your wifes injured, go to the closet behind you and click on it to access it collect the sheets but don’t take the pillow we don’t want that…. yet 8-) put the sheets into your inventory by clicking the sheets then clicking on the box at the top left hand corner.

Image

Now it is time to craft click on your inventory and at the bottom of the inventory screen there is some hammer and nails, this is your crafting screen, click on that and put the sheets into the box as shown.

Image

Take the results and put them in your inventory. Then move up to your wife click on your inventory take the bandages and click on your wife. Congratulations you have sucessfully bandaged your wife now it’s time to go grab some painkillers. go to the bathroom behind you and grab the painkillers which can be found in the cabinet above the sink and use them on your wife in the same way as the bandages.

Now it is time to fortify your new home go into the shed by leaving through the door in the kitchen.
Image

Get to the shed and grab the hammer nails and board. Put the hammer in the big circle and the board in the smaller circle while putting the nails in your inventory. Use the hammer by pressing Ctrl + Left click and swing at the door to break it and recieve more wood.

Image

Image

Head back to the house and go through the kitchen door barricade all the windows and the door in the kitchen.

Image

Move southeast through the house, where there will be 3 doors and a window. Barricade the window next to the door, but not the door (you will find out why soon enough). Behind you there are 2 other doors, barricade the futhest door and then break down the first door for more wood. Now go upstairs and barricade all the windows in the room you started off in, then go to the bathroom and barricade the window through there. Barricading windows is quite possibly the most important thing to do, zombies are able to see you walking around when you are upstairs. If that were to happen then they would all come shuffling towards the house! We don’t want that. Remember if you can see them, then they can see you.

Adric’s Food Guide

This guide will teach you all there is to know about food, and the different effects it has. I have broken this guide up into sections to make it easier to navigate.

Moodle Basics

There are different levels of how hungry your character is or isn’t, each with their own benefits. Yes, there are benefits to starving yourself. I have given each moodle a rating, based on how many -10 hunger items it takes to get to that point from starving. The carry rating is based on strength and shows the maximum amount you can carry. If you reach your max carry level (i.e. 330 weight out of 330 weight) you will take damage every step you take. Quite a lot of damage actually. Your movement speed is also greatly reduced with each level of encumbrance.

Very Well Fed: 100-120, Carry: 330

This is the highest positive level hunger moodle. It gives you increased strength and greatly increased healing. If you are severely injured and there are zombies at the door and you need to heal quickly to increase your chance of survival, then this moodle is for you.

Well Fed: 90-99, Carry: 330

Second highest. Gives great healing and the strength boost.

Fed: 80-89, Carry: 330

Your standard bonus strength and a slight healing boost.

Slightly Fed: 70-79, Carry: 330

Not Hungry: Carry: 300

Only shows up from going from slightly fed down, does not go from peckish to not hungry

Peckish: 50-69, Carry: 300

First indicator that you are starting down the road to starvation.

Hungry: 11-49, Carry: 275

Reduced Strength and healing. Can sleep.

Very Hungry: 1-10, Carry: 250

Very reduced strength and healing. Cannot sleep.

Starving: 0, Carry: 225

Taking damage and severely reduced strength.

These numbers scale differently. Basically the hungrier you are the longer it takes to drop to the next level of hunger.

Here are the numbers I have for dropping from most fed to starving. They will be tweaked in the future as I make them more accurate.

Very Well Fed: 1:20
Well Fed: 1:30
Fed: 1:10
Slightly Fed: 1:20
Not Hungry: 7:00
Peckish: 5:10
Hungry: 17:00
Very Hungry: 19:30

These are numbers based on staying awake from VWF to starving. What little research I have found is that your hunger increases a lot slower if you are sleeping as much as possible.

Another thing to note is that when you aren’t hungry, it doesn’t matter if you eat a -40 hunger item or a -10 hunger item. It will only bring you up to the next level of fed. I’m not sure if this is a bug or intended. Regardless, it is better to eat 3 cans of pop then three loaves of bread if you are going for longevity.

How does food go bad?

The game checks a few things at 00:00 every day to make food go bad.  Food does not go bad any other time, only at midnight. Here is a simple list to help explain it better:

  1. How old is food? The food is over it’s rot date (4 days for most meats for example) then go to the next step.
  2. Is the food in a fridge? If not, the food becomes rotten. If it is in a fridge go to the next step.
  3. Is the food over it’s rot date*2.5? If it is, then the food becomes rotten.

That’s all you need to know. Basically you can run around with food out of the fridge for as long as you want as long as you have it in the fridge by midnight. It doesn’t check anything else. Individual foods do not have timers that count down slower if it is in a fridge. The only thing that matters is how old the food is and where it is when midnight rolls around.

When should I eat?

It depends what you are going for. If you are trying to heal, as long as you aren’t taking damage from any sources, staying at very hungry will allow you to heal up completely over the course of a couple of days. If you are healing from a scratch or something, you may want to become less hungry. A good key is to eat until you are healing. If you have many injuries your health will drop, so just eat food items until you are healing slightly, then stay at that hunger level. Being hungry is the key to longevity.

If you are going for longevity then when you should eat depends on what type of food you have available.

This food is the rarest and the most powerful. This is cooked food and except for soup it all goes bad quickly, becoming -20 food. To get the most efficiency out of your -80 food you should eat it when you are starving and at “moderate damage.” After eating it go directly to sleep. When you wake up take 5 sleeping pills then go back to sleep as soon as you become exhausted. Repeat until you have slept 6 times and used up 25 doses of sleeping pills. If you don’t eat again until moderate damage from starvation you will have earned about 97 hours.

-40 Food:
Allow yourself to starve until you reach “Moderate Damage” then quickly eat your -40 food item and then go to sleep. Upon waking take a pain killer and 5 doses of sleeping pills. Wait til you are exhausted. Go to sleep. Wake up, take a dose of painkillers and 5 more doses of sleeping pills. Go to sleep when you are exhausted. If you time it right you should become exhausted the second time just before you become very hungry. This will allow you to squeeze three sleeps in and net about 54 hours and 40 minutes before you need to sleep again.

Alternative method: Starve til you are at “Moderate Damage” then eat your food and go to sleep. When you wake up take three sleeping pills, wait until you get the “Tired” moodle and go right back to bed. When you wake up, take 3 more pills, go to sleep as soon as your moodle hits exhausted. This will net you about 53 hours before you start to starve. It uses less sleeping pills and is easier to accomplish. If you miss that third sleep in the method above because you get too hungry your hours will drop to less than 50.

-30 Food:
-30 Food is to be eaten at the “minor damage” of starvation, it will earn you about 37 hours.

-20 Food:
At -20 you should eat and then sleep at “Minor Damage” this will earn you an extra 30 hours and 20 minutes, approximately.

-15 Food:
Eat two of these and count it as a -30.

-10 Food:
This one is exactly the same as the one above, but you need to eat two doses of food. If you don’t have two doses, just eat when you are “starving” as it doesn’t make a big difference.

All of the above require the use of painkillers whenever you are experiencing the level 2 pain moodle “Pain”. If you do not have painkillers, do NOT starve yourself. Eat as soon as you go from very hungry to starving, otherwise you will be in too much pain to sleep and will reduce your overall longevity substantially.

Sleeping vs Staying Awake

Sleeping when you can will make you starve much slower. For example, if you stay awake the entire time after eating a -40 food, you will go from staving to starving in about 33 hours. However if you sleep three times during that period it will take you over 50 hours to go from starving to starving… and that’s on the same amount of food. Sleeping pills are very useful in this case.

A -20 food item will go from around 22 hours while awake to 28 hours with sleep. More if you eat at the correct “starving point” as listed above.

Encumbrance

“What does encumbrance have to do with food?” you ask. Well, says I, quite a lot actually. The more you are encumbered the slower you move. Therefore the less items you can grab while out foraging.

Quite Heavy Load:
This is the lowest form of encumbrance. It occurs at 50% of your max weight plus 1. It comes with movement speed penalties and you become exhausted faster.

Heavy Load:
At 80% of your max plus 1 you get to the next level. This greatly reduces your movement speed and does not allow you to run anymore. Shift will now give you a slightly faster walk. You become exhausted faster than Quite Heavy Load.

Very Heavy Load:
At 95% plus 1 your encumbrance becomes Very Heavy Load. You can barely move at all. Shift barely increases your speed and you become exhausted after less than 20 minutes of game time walking. Shift will make you become exhausted much faster.

Extremely Heavy Load:
This moodle shows up at any weight greater than your max. Your movement speed is severely hampered and every step you take causes you a large amount of damage, resulting in injury very quickly. Note that there is currently a bug where this moodle is in effect at your max (ie. 300/300) but the moodle does not show up until you are over your max. (ie. 301/300) Please note that you cannot actually DIE from carrying too much. You will be reduced to critical damage levels and then your health will not drop any further (assuming you aren’t taking damage from other sources.)

Final Word

The latest edit was adding an easier way to eat -40 food and still get the best number of hours for your buck. The new way gives slightly less hours, but is easier to do, and uses up 40% less sleeping pills.

Oh. And for the record the reduced strength from being hungry does not make it more difficult to kill zombies, it just means you can carry less.

Hope this helps everyone. I will next update this when I learn more things, or when the new patch comes out and I can include recipes and stuff.

I’ve made a calculator for anyone to use. You can just punch in how much food you have left and it will tell you approximately how long you will be able to live off that food using the above methods.
